Ernie Marshall, Director

Ernie Marshall is a Hawkins County native and received a B.S. degree in Education from East Tennessee State University.  He is retired from Tennessee State Parks after 30 years of service as Park Manager of Warrior’s Path State Park.  He initiated the establishment of a Friends’ group for the park, thereby promoting new park revenue and special projects.  Under the direction of Marshall, Warriors’ Path State Park was awarded Most Improved State Park in 1991.

Marshall served on the Kingsport Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors for Convention and Visitors’ Bureau and is a member of the Tennessee Recreation and Parks Association (TRPA).

The primary purpose of this department is to provide a system of parks for recreation, to include programs and events for adults and children.

Laurel Run Park - This beautiful park, set stunningly along the placid Holston River, is operated by Hawkins County as a municipal park. The property was ceded to the county following the conlusion of filming for the major motion picture The River, starring Mel Gibson and Sissy Spacek. Park includes river-access, a mountain creek, playground equipment, tennis courts, softball and baseball fields, and more. The park is open year round.  Picnic shelters are available for reservation beginning  April 1 thru October 31. Free; fee for reservation of shelters. Call 423-357-8110 MWF from 3:00-6:00pm.
