Lowell B. Bean was elected to the office of Superintendent of Roads in 2006 after retiring from Quebecor World with 41 years of service.  He serves on the Board of Directors of Natural Resources Conservation Services and is a graduate of Surgoinsville High School.

Lowell is married to the former Lynda Stewart from Hancock County and they have three children, Kristi, Karri and Brandon and 2 grandchildren.  Lowell and Lynda live on a farm in Stanley Valley where Lowell grew up.

The Highway Department maintains 874 miles of roadway.  Duties include paving roads both with hot top and chip and seal; patching or repairing bad areas; installing new and replacing damaged drain pipe; keeping ditches free of debris; keeping roads clear during inclement weather; mowing roadsides; repairing bridges.

The Highway Department also operates a repair shop to maintain their vehicles and road equipment.
